Description
A vintage sculptural “King Richard” candlestick designed in silver-plate by American architect Richard Meier (b. 1934) for Swid Powell in 1983. The modernist candle holders were part of Swid Powell's inaugural collection of high-style ceramics, glass and metalware designed by well-known architects, including Richard Meier, Michael Graves, and Robert Venturi. This candlestick design is illustrated in Jewel Stern's Modernism in American Silver: 20th century design, page 310, fig. 16.14. Stern comments that Meier's use of simple openwork squares evokes a motif favored by Josef Hoffmann and the Weiner Werkstatte.
candleholder is in very good condition with some shallow polishing scratches and tarnish, measuring 9 in. H. and marked Swid Powell / RM / Made in Italy / Silver Plated on base.
Swid Powell was founded in 1982 by Nan Swid and Addie Powell. The company produced stylish and utilitarian home decor objects designed principally by architects.
